No rain today and the sun was shining brightly. We started the day with a trip to Fort Barrancas. It was built between 1839 and 1844 using slave labor. It was part of the defense system protecting the Navy Yard in Pensacola Bay. In one of the tunnels we encountered a bat hanging from the ceiling. It wasn’t very big, but was our first encounter with that kind of little critter. The fort has been well preserved and was interesting to tour.
Bill chose not to go to Fort Pickens on Gulf Islands National Seashore. To get there we drove through Pensacola, over Three Mile Bridge, through Gulf Breeze, and across another bridge to Pensacola Beach.
We found a funky little local eatery in a strip mall in PB. The food was good. With happy tummies we drove west to Fort Pickens. On the way out to the fort we saw an osprey on its stick nest. The fort was used for over a hundred years and had a lot of battle scars.
When we got back to the motorhome Brent and the kids went to the beach while Bill and I made a quick trip to Walmart.
At 6:15, four of us went to a hockey game. It was a first for all of us. We cheered for the home team, the Pensacola Ice Flyers, a farm team for the Detroit Red Wings. We all had a great time and, as we drove home, we were all trying to figure out when we could go to another hockey game. We were hooked!
